chatbakery

CHATTANOOGA BAKERY

After 100 years, the Moonpie is as popular as ever. Customers often wonder how the bakery thought of the name “Moonpie” for their bestseller. Well, years ago one of the bakery’s salesmen was traveling to see his customers. One evening, he met a group of coalminers and began to ask them what they would like to see in a snack for their lunch pails. After a few questions, he asked one of the miners how big this snack should be. The miner raised his large hands up to the rising moon, circled it with his fingers and said, “about that big.”

krystal

KRYSTAL

Despite the fact that it was the middle of the Great Depression, Krystal founders Rody Davenport, Jr. and J. Glenn Sherrill knew that even amid harsh financial times, people would patronize a restaurant that was kept spotlessly clean and promised to serve a good meal at the lowest possible price. On that simple premise, the partners served the first customer, French Jenkins, six Krystals and a cup of coffee for 35 cents and for over seven decades continue to do so.
